You don’t have to search hard to find Vietnamese dining in the East Bay, where the rich culinary tradition that combines both French and Chinese influences finds a stronghold. The managers at Tay Ho Oakland are capitalizing on this taste for Vietnamese, serving up what they call a “tradition of simple, elegant home cooking, blending the best of East and West.” For both the downtown-lunch crowd, and the family-and-friends evening crowd, Tay Ho is conveniently perched on the corner of 12th and Webster streets. And for those diners yearning for seafood, Tay Ho offers a breadth of house favorites like bun rieu cua, vermicelli noodle soup with ground crab, shrimp, egg, tofu and tomatoes, served in a piping-hot deep bowl. But Tay Ho is also making a mark by offering some not-so-conventional Vietnamese platters like bun rieu oc, an escargot, crab, and shrimp soup. Large groups and families will find the restaurant accommodating with family dinner specials, or com phan, for parties up to six people. And for a city with no shortage of Vietnamese options, Tay Ho certainly brings a friendly and convenient element to the mix. Lunch and dinner Tue.–Sat. (until 5 p.m. Sun.).
