Google's Field Trip App Offers Details About Where You Travel
Field Trip reveals hidden gems about familiar and unfamiliar places, attractions, even offers.
No doubt one of the best things about living in the Bay Area is the multitude of activities and distractions available within a stone’s throw. Even for lifelong residents, there are always new discoveries to be made–and there are mobile apps to help you do just that. One of them is Field Trip, a free app that’s available for both Android and iOS devices.
Google’s Field Trip provides a digital guide that helps you learn about everything from local history to the best places to shop. The app runs in the background, using the GPS function of your phone to alert you when you’re nearing hidden gems. As you travel around, you’ll receive notifications that direct you to a “card” within the app. Each card provides a snapshot of the interest or activity with an image, a map to its location, and a short blurb (often with a “read more” link). You have the option to rate the cards out of five stars, mark them as favorites, and share them with friends.
The various places and experiences of interest fall under categories such as Architecture, Historic Places & Events, Lifestyle, Offers & Deals, Food Drinks & Fun, Movie Locations, Outdoor Art, and Obscure Places of Interest. Only interested in a handful of those categories? You can pick and choose exactly what types of content is served to you.
In order to provide rich information in each of the category, Field Trip connects to dozens of publications that feed content into the app. For instance, a card revealing an iconic photograph taken at Oakland’s Lakeside Park is fed by Arcadia Publishing, while another containing a write-up on pork belly at Jong Ga House comes from Tasting Table. Other noteworthy content providers include Sunset Magazine, TimeOut, and Zagat.
Field Trip offers a fun way to find new places to eat or shop, or discover obscure historical facts, as you stroll around the neighborhood. And if you’re driving, you can activate the speak function, which will read descriptions aloud, providing a welcome distraction during a commute or road trip. This app is a worthy download whether you’re rediscovering your own locale or traveling further afield.
