Hip and Delicious
Thick, gooey cinnamon rolls, warm from the oven, and rock-and-roll, punks and pin-up fashion? Believe it or not, it makes perfect sense at hip Cinnaholic, where tattooed employees work hard behind the counter of the 100 percent vegan cinnamon roll specialty bakery in Berkeley.
Shannon and Florian Radke, the husband-and-wife pair behind Cinnaholic, combine their passion for all things vegan, rock, punk and pin-up plus his knack for marketing and hers for baking to create decadent gourmet cinnamon rolls using all natural, vegan ingredients. They also propagate the vegan lifestyle and work with outside organizations for animal rights.
But the most tantalizing aspect of their mom-and-pop cinnamon roll enterprise is by far the customer’s ability to customize rolls. There are 27 flavors of frosting to choose from, including marshmallow and coconut, as well as seasonal flavors like candy cane and gingersnap cookie. Drool-inducing specialty rolls include chocolate chip “cookie” dough, a mocha almond roll, fruit pie rolls, an Oreo explosion roll and more.
The store offers an online ordering form — an aspect more than just a few people have utilized. Musicians, pro-skaters, movie stars and artists — including John Feldmann of Goldfinger, Tim McIlrath of Rise Against, Kat Von D and the High Voltage/LA Ink tattoo crew, Kenny Wilson of Marilyn Manson and Aaron “P-Nut” Wills of 311 — have come out of the woodwork to get their vegan sweets fix.
Says co-owner Shannon Radke of the surprising celebrity interest, “Who could have guessed Hollywood would end up in our store?”
