You shall know Audrye Sessions by its home — a sprawling live-work warehouse where the entire Oakland band resides, right beside the oh-so-visible Cotton Mill Studios off Interstate 880 — as well as its languidly romantic indie rock. Bassist Alicia Campbell has this to say about the group’s second album, a work in progress expected to be released by year’s end: “It seems like all the music is dark and heavy, but the lyrics are more feel-good, about love.” And rest assured, love is all around, especially in Oakland.
The Alley Number one is the Alley. Ryan [Karazija, vocalist] and Mike [Knox, guitarist] used to go there all the time because Ryan loves to sing karaoke, and the piano player Rod Dibble plays, and you can pass the mic around and sing. 3325 Grand Ave., (510) 444-8505
Mama Buzz Cafe We played a lot of acoustic shows there, but it’s also a coffee shop and supports the art community, which is nice. 2318 Telegraph Ave., (510) 465-4073, www.mamabuzzcafe.com
The Layover Tuesday nights at the Layover, it’s improv live music. Last week when we went, it was the keyboard player from Rogue
Wave and Anton [Patzner] from Judgement Day, and they all got together and improvised. 1517 Franklin St., (510) 834-1517, www.oaklandlayover.com
Fox Theater When I first moved here a couple years back — I grew up in Fremont, and we were practicing and rehearsing here — there were no nice venues to play at, like the Fox, the Parish or the Uptown. Now we see big national acts coming through when before it was all San Francisco, San Francisco, San Francisco. It puts us on the map. 1807 Telegraph Ave., (510) 302-2277, www.thefoxoakland.com
Sinaloa Taco Truck Hands down, the best Mexican food in Oakland. We tell everyone to go there. It’s vegetarian burritos for me — something about the flavoring and the rice. 2138 International Blvd., (510) 535-1206.
