Patrons Love Lo Coco’s and Burma Superstar

What’s your go-to Oakland dish?

Joan Cannon: The cannelloni at Lo Coco’s on Piedmont Avenue. I grew up eating Italian food on “The Hill” in St. Louis, so I can say that this local place offers truly authentic Sicilian food. The cannelloni is big enough that I eat half and take the other half home for lunch the next day. It’s always delicious.

Tassi Espos: The tea leaf salad at Burma Superstar on Telegraph Avenue in Oakland. It is a colorful, refreshing salad that is beautifully presented by the server and then tossed at your table. The multiple ingredients include various lettuces, tomatoes, fried garlic, sesame, and dried shrimp that is a multi-flavored joy to eat. Paired with a cup of soup it is the perfect lunch or starter for dinner.

Tina Canales: The pescado crudo dishes at Duende. They change all the time based on season and availability, but are always delicious and exciting. I love that Duende aesthetically feels like Oakland here and now, not like a “designed” restaurant that could be plopped down in any major city. The vibe is fun, hip, and genuine.

Will Bekker: The tombo tuna crudo small-plate starter at Toast Kitchen + Bar. The tuna dish is diced and includes jalapeño and habanero peppers, shaved carrots, cilantro, a sweet soy vinaigrette, and is served with house taro chips. I like this meal because it is light but has the impact of a heavier meal without the aftermath. It’s really good.

Lenee Trotman: The rib-eye steak from The Fat Lady. It is hands down the best steak I’ve ever had in the East Bay. It’s a huge cut that is super flavorful and tender. It comes with mashed potatoes or (my favorite) a loaded baked potato and seasonal vegetables. They offer an on the side house-made steak sauce with bacon and mushrooms, which I highly recommend. To me, this is the perfect comfort food dish that never disappoints.

Marlee Taxy: I can tell you what my favorite drink is. I love a good cup of “It’z the Best” at Philz Coffee on College Avenue. It is really the best. It’s so wonderful how they lovingly prepare each cup to fit each person’s requests. I pair the cup with a fantastic La Farine morning bun. This is a great way to start the day.
