The Face of All-Day (and Late-Night) Breakfast

Rudy’s Can’t Fail Cafe

One could be forgiven for considering Rudy’s Can’t Fail Cafe an East Bay institution. This despite its playful, irreverent vibe courtesy of table-top toys, punk-rock roots, and, at the Oakland location, a full bar proudly offering a six-dollar PBR-and-a-shot. Now entering their fifth and 15th years, Rudy’s twin outposts in Uptown Oakland and central Emeryville sort of feel like they’ve always been there. That’s a feeling founder and co-owner Jeffery Bischoff isn’t inclined to fight; in fact, Rudy’s cafes embrace nostalgia even as the neighborhoods around them undergo rapid change. “It’s a classic diner that maintains an element of fun,” Bischoff says, “and keeps the kid inside alive.”
