The Halal Guys is opening its new Downtown Berkeley location on Friday, Jan. 26.
All customers on grand-opening day can enjoy a live DJ, freebies, and other treats, and the first fifty people in line starting at 11 a.m. that day will receive a free meal and drink.
The Halal Guys began in 1990 as a New York City hot-dog cart whose three founders soon realized that Muslim cab drivers were searching the city for delicious halal meals. A chicken-and-gyro platter was created to satisfy those hungry cabbies.
Serving Middle Eastern-inspired halal-certified sandwiches, platters, sides, desserts, and more, the Halal Guys is now an international fast-casual phenomenon with over 200 locations throughout the US as well as in Canada and Southeast Asia.
When its first San Francisco location opened last year in the Tenderloin, SFEater reported that opening-day lines wound around the block.
The Berkeley shop is in a space formerly occupied by Vietnamese pho restaurant Le Regal.
