Tony Gemignani Wins Worldwide Pizza Championship

It's his thirteenth such title.

Fremont-born-and-bred master pizzaiolo Tony Gemignani has just won the first-ever Antonio Mezzero All-Star Pizza Championship in Porto, Portugal. 

Taking first place in the contest's Port Wine category, this victory makes him a thirteen-time World Pizza Champion. 

After three rounds of competition, Gemignani’s winning pizza incorporated local ingredients such as Portuguese chorizo, smoked Portuguese fleur de sel, Topo São Jorge Cheese, and a port-wine reduction made with Portuguese brand Croft Port’s 20 Year Old Tawny Port, as well as more modern flavors such as nduja, mozzarella, crema de port, micro greens, and more.

“It was such an exciting experience working with the rich, local ingredients of Portugal,” said Gemignani, who was raised on his family's East Bay farm and now helms the International School of Pizza in San Francisco. He has appeared on Good Morning America, the Today Show, and other TV programs.

“The result is a really high-quality pizza that harmonizes with Croft’s 20 year old Tawny Port," he said, "and I’m looking forward to bringing these unique flavors back with me.”

On the heels of his victory, Gemignani is hosting a specialty pairing event early next year at his San Francisco restaurant, Tony's Pizza Napoletana, in which pizza and additional courses inspired by the contest's winning ingredients will be paired with sips from Porto-based Croft Port.
