Berkeley-based biotech pet-food firm Wild Earth Inc. has just launched two new flavors of its Good Protein Dog Snacks, made with koji — aka aspergillus oryzae, the fungus that is fundamental in the making of soy sauce and sake.

Taste-tested on actual canines at Oakland's Rocket Dog Rescue, the new flavors are banana-cinnamon and strawberry-beet.

According to a press release, the new products offer all ten essential amino acids along with omega 3, 6, and 9 fatty acids an prebiotics. The company notes that bananas are good sources of potassium and magnesium, while cinnamon "may support periodontal functions by promoting a proper balance of oral flora," while strawberries contain antioxidants and vitamins while beets "are a rich source of phytonutrients to help support heart and liver function."

The new flavors were featured on a March 17 episode of the ABC show Shark Tank.

"Bananas, strawberries, and beets can be healthy and fun additions to a dog's diet, and are naturally low in fat and calories," Wild Earth's chief veterinary officer Ernie Ward said in a press release.

"We've taken these benefits and added them to high-protein koji for a snack without the drawbacks of pet foods derived from animal agriculture and without the harmful eco-impact," Ward said.

Hailed for its umami flavor, koji has been used in Asian foods for millennia. Wild Earth cultivates koji in its own fermentation tanks, then adds ingredients such as flax, oats, and green tea to make pet foods containing no meat — thus reducing the amount of global animal slaughter.

"Our customers and their dogs have been asking for more flavors, and as a foster parent for Rocket Dog Rescue [I realized that] the opinion of all of those good boys and good girls matters a lot to me," said Wild Earth CEO Ryan Bethencourt. "It took many treats, and many belly rubs, but we got an overwhelming 'wags up' for the new flavors."
