EBMUD - A History of Service
The East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) has delivered high quality drinking water for 84 years. Today, EBMUD has more than 1.3 million water customers in Alameda and Contra Costa counties, provides wastewater service to 640,000 customers along the Bay from Richmond to San Leandro, and manages 28,000 acres of protected watershed in the East Bay.
Looking toward the future, EBMUD is aggressively tackling difficult climate change issues, formulating policies and actions to promote renewable energy, supporting greenhouse gas legislation, pursuing water conservation and recycling opportunities, and exploring new water sources such as desalination.
EBMUD produces green hydropower, uses gas-electric hybrids in its sedan fleet, and reuses methane gas in its wastewater process. EBMUD is recognized for its many initiatives to protect the San Francisco Bay and was recognized in 2003 by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for its green power leadership.
