At the City of Oakland, every day is Earth Day! Named among the ten greenest cities in America, we take pride in our natural beauty, great weather and commitment to sustainability. City government is working to preserve our environment through key initiatives like smart growth, green business and building practices, promoting local shopping and food production, climate protection, creek preservation, green fleet policies, renewable energy and residential/business recycling with a goal of zero waste by 2020. Today, more than 100 companies are capitalizing on our rich soil, long growing season and existing infrastructure to produce food right here in Oakland. This means fresher food on your table and in local restaurants. It also means less energy is consumed because food doesn’t have to travel as far to reach us. Also, we’re doing our part to encourage use of public transit, clean fuel vehicles and bicycle transportation. In addition, our world-class port has embarked upon its own ambitious sustainability program. Together, we are becoming a sustainable city for all.
