In the LEED platinum Betty Irene Moore Natural Science Building, Mills College recaptures rainwater to use for flushing toilets, reducing water need by 61 percent each year.
Oakland institutions, such as Mills College, have teamed up with the StopWaste Partnership to minimize waste, cut costs and conserve natural resources. With free expert assistance from StopWaste, many Oakland organizations like Mills have become better neighbors. These partnerships have helped hundreds of companies and agencies become more aware of ways to increase efficiency and environmental performance; in short, to become more sustainable. Together we have diverted hundreds of thousands of tons of materials from the landfill and reduced operating costs for many companies. This is also a business retention program. “These companies and agencies make Oakland a better place,” said Rory Bakke, who manages the StopWaste Partnership program. “They’re real community heroes.”
