Just like New Orleans, it takes several visits to this delightful sliver of Crescent City culture to savor all the sinful delights. Satisfying bayou-savvy classics include gumbo with okra, andouille sausage, shrimp, tasso and rice; tomatoey jambalaya with noticeable but gentle heat; shrimp Creole; fried chicken and catfish; and muffaletta sandwiches and po’boys. Concessions to East Bay tastes include grilled (instead of steamed) locally made boudin; blackened ahi tuna; creative use of arugula; and vegetarian options. But the attractive, amiable setting (augmented by friendly service and Louisiana music) invites indulging in everything from fried cheese grits with crawfish étouffée, hush puppies with honey-butter, and brussels sprouts sautéed in brown butter, garlic and sage, to Abita Turbo Dog beer, beignets and bananas Foster bread pudding.
