This unpretentious Temescal restaurant is one of Oakland’s oldest Ethiopian and Eritrean restaurants and has been turning out injera and kitfo longer than its fashionable neighbors have been in business. Typically outfitted in rattan and African art with a raucous adjoining bar, this is the place to duck into for solid family-style platters of East African delights like doro watt (hot and spicy chicken in berbere sauce), temtmo/yemisir watt (red lentil stew marinated in berbere sauce and spices), kik alicha (saucy yellow split peas) and ye-gomen alicha (spiced mustard greens). Start with an Asmara smoothie, or go for the honey wine or an African import beer for the full continent adventure. Lunch Fri.–Sun., dinner Tue.–Sun.
