Self-proclaimed as “the neighborhood hangout,” Aunt Mary’s Café, a hipsterish-yet-homey Temescal newcomer, seems to be just that, thanks to the recipes of the chef and owner whose aunt’s dishes are featured. There’s a laid-back patio out front for lingering over a latte and Texas-style breakfasts or root beer and Southern-influenced salads and sandwiches. The main restaurant, decorated with clever art for sale and antiques hinting of an elder stateswoman, is roomy with a long bar cozied up to the kitchen. Huevos divorciados and Southern bubble and squeak fly out of that kitchen in the mornings, and the pulled-pork sandwich—an open-faced sweetish number with stewed tomatoes atop a bulbous homemade bun with a side of tangy-sugary chow-chow—sees lots of afternoon action. Fried oysters, fried okra and chicken-fried steak make their way onto the menu, as do nacho popcorn, cornbread, hush puppies and grilled pimento cheese. Breakfast and lunch Tue.–Sun.
