Essential Information

3340 Grand Ave.
Oakland, CA

510-839-4986

A rainbow of hanging papel picado, red tablecloths, yellow walls, mirrors and murals by local artist Peter Lee brighten this tiny, no-frills cantina that shines with home-style Mexican fare. The spicy, stew-like carne asada and crunchy petite chicken flautas make flavorful impressions, and the platos come loaded with creamy, soupy beans and plump, moist golden-hued rice. Columbian-born Connie Perdomo is the owner and chef, and she’s been greeting regulars and newcomers with warmth since she opened her doors in 1998. Customers’ postcards from around the world hailing Connie’s burritos, tortas and chilaquiles adorn the checkout counter, which is just a few steps away from a secluded back patio. Don’t leave without trying Tina’s Famous Flan, a velvety caramel-flavored custard with a kick and ribbons of whipped cream, a recipe Connie says she took directly from her mother. Breakfast, lunch and dinner Mon.–Sat.
