Oakland, CA 510-763-0300 This stylish Northern Italian restaurant, a Grand Avenue draw since 1994, has a lot going for it: ambience, affordable prices, attentive service and great cheesecake. Sure, patrons come for the risotto, pasta, wood-fired pizza and rotisserie chicken, and they can easily waltz in on a Friday night at prime time without a reservation, but it’s the cheesecake that brings us back. We strayed from the regular menu for prosciutto-wrapped cantaloupe and sea bass atop sautéed mixed greens but found both a tad flawed (overly fatty and salty, respectively). More impressive were the Caprese salad and the grilled prawns encased in pancetta, though neither made our taste buds sing like the creamy, light-as-air cheesecake did. All in all, a favorable evening out, even if our poor choice in accompanying wine may have compromised the overall experience. Lunch Mon.–Fri. and dinner daily. (Reservations 6 or more.)
