The Z Café and Bar occupies the 1925 landmark building built by auto dealer Charles Howard (the owner of Seabiscuit) on Broadway Auto Row, with oversized pendant chandeliers taking the place of showroom lights. Indeed, the former café-in-a-showroom has been transformed into a contemporary restaurant the likes of which Howard never imagined. The “Z’s” are owners Mehdi (house mixologist) and Sheila (general manager) Zarekari, who have put years of previous restaurant experience into their new café. Standout items on the frequently changing menu are coq au vin, lamb and herb stew and pan-roasted salmon with wild rice, cranberries, walnuts and an orange beurre blanc sauce. But a big element of Z is the bar, so don’t miss the inspired cocktails—definitely try the Mehdi Special—or the house mojitos. Lunch Mon.–Fri, dinner Tue.–Sat.
