What is Public Health?

   It’s the science and practice of protecting and improving the health and well-being of communities.

   To do this, we, the Alameda County Public Health Department (ACPHD),

    •    track and report health status and diseases in our communities;
    •    provide outreach and education to prevent and control diseases;
    •    help residents access quality health care; and
    •    work to protect the health of our communities during emergencies and disasters.

   ACPHD has 600 employees in 21 locations across the county.  We cover 1.4 million people who live in 13 cities (Albany, Emeryville, Piedmont, Alameda, Oakland, San Leandro, Hayward, Union City, Fremont, Newark, Dublin, Pleasanton, Livermore) and the unincorporated areas.  We partner with City of Berkeley Public Health Department.

   Our community focus means we actively seek partnerships with health care providers, grass roots organizations, corporate entities, individuals, schools, and others.  For more details about our programs and services, visit us online: www.acphd.org.
