ANOTHER NEIGHBORHOOD

I love reading your magazine and appreciate how you go out of your way to bring attention to the wonderful parts of this city. I found your story on the best places to live [“6 Great Neighborhoods,” May 2006] a little disheartening, because you completely overlooked the wonderfully diverse and progressive areas of downtown Oakland, including the City Center and West Oakland.

You failed to recognize the area’s wellknown restaurants (Le Cheval, Anita’s Mexican Restaurant, Jesso’s Seafood, La Cucina Italiana and soon Breads of India) and some lesser-known ones (Tamarindo and Oakland Grill). The neighborhood is also home to the Paramount Theatre, the African American Museum and Library at Oakland, the Oakland Ice Center, the First Unitarian Church of Oakland, federal and state buildings and Oakland City Hall.

There has been a lot of hard work, vision and heart put into changing the area with very little attention coming its way, even though there are so many worthy finds, from the Fox Theater to Cafe Van Kleef.

I recently moved to the neighborhood after purchasing a beautifully restored 1892 Queen Anne Cottage. My partner and I often walk to get acquainted with the neighborhood, and we have both been disappointed with the lack of attention the area gets. Maybe you will venture out to some of the areas that are not traditionally “the place to be” in Oakland.
