Hella Tight

     Carne Cruda’s got it right: Oakland is hella tight.
     It’s hip, hot and happening, from Uptown to Temescal, from the hills to the bay. It’s fun, charming, cool and exciting. Sure, Oaktown is a little dodgy with a few nicks, scratches and rough edges, but that’s The Town, and that’s what we hella love.
     That’s what we’re celebrating in this, our Best of Oakland issue, the one you ought to keep on the coffee table all year for hints about where to brunch in style, where to shop like Alice Waters and where to ogle fine art. We’ve got tips on don’t-miss dessert destinations, the freshest sushi house and the spa with the highest “ah!” factor. Like pizza? So do we, and we’ve got
the goods on the best thin, thick and non-artisan babies your heart might desire. Beer’s the new wine — the next big thing — and Oakland is riding the wave, so we’ve put together a nice little beer ramble just for you.
Kids, pets, drinks, lifestyle options, goods and services  — more than 100 winners are recognized in this year’s Best Of coverage. That’s a lot of winners.
     We printed a ballot in the January/February issue, giving readers a chance to cast votes for their favorites until early March; they could also vote online, and their picks are indicated as readers choices. At the same time, we scoured the area for favorites in myriad esoteric categories to generate editors choices. The result is a jam-packed section of editors and readers choices illustrated with inspired photographs from some of our favorite photographers. Our fearless team sampled cocktails, ate chocolate, gobbled up soul food, chauffeured out-of-towners around, read local authors and shopped for wine and spirits in the name of cataloging the best of our fair city.
     We’ve done all the research so you don’t have to. And with more than 100 options to check out, you’ve got a busy summer ahead of you. So dive in and see if your favs match ours. If they don’t, that just means there’s even more to love about Oakland.
