Oakland Rocks

It’s teeming with parks, multi-ethnic inhabitants, fine dining, artists, cool landmarks, sports teams, quaint neighborhoods, quirky events and excellent performance venues.
That’s not to say The Town is without big city problems—it isn’t. But we can forgive Oaktown many of its faults, especially now, when we put together our annual Best of Oakland issue. This is when we revel in putting our fingers on some of the very things that make Oakland so special—from free telescope viewing at Chabot Space & Science Center, to ambitious new restaurants like Camino, fine Belgian beers at the Trappist and the classic movies at the Paramount Theatre, accompanied by Wurlitzer maestro Jim Riggs. Isn’t your heart swelling with pride just about now? Even in our darkest moments we produce something soulful, such as the astonishing turnout of ordinary citizens on March 27 for the funeral of our four fine policemen who were killed in East Oakland.
For more of our favorites, plus what readers chose as their own faves, turn to page 49 for “Our Mutliculti Metropolitan Mashup.” It rocks, thanks to senior editor George Shirk, who wrote the report.
That’s not all that rocks about this issue, which offers an exciting and expanded format for more East Bay coverage.
Wanda Hennig enters the world of cowry shell divination, and Ginny Prior chats with Fox Theater man-of-the-hour Phil Tagami. Charlie Haas’ pens an homage to Oakland in “I’m From There,” and Derk Richardson reviews stellar Glenview newcomer Marzano. Just like the Best Of coverage, the issue continues to explore and celebrate the East Bay’s diverse cultural landscape—the best hands-down reason we’ve found for calling Oakland home. Let us know what rocks your world.
