A Valuable Lesson

Today the Oakland Unified School District hopes to teach the governor a valuable lesson. In a press release issued today, the OUSD announced plans to hold rally today at 4 p.m. at the Paul Robeson Administration Building, 1025 Second Ave. The OUSD wants the governor to get the message that budget cuts are one of the biggest threats to California Schools. At the rally, demonstrators hope to present real solutions, help local residents apply internal pressure on legislators and operate action stations that will help participants express their opposition to cuts through e-mail, mail and phone calls. Repreive for Apple Moth

In an era where pollution comes from water, air and food, last week's light brown apple moth ruling is being seen by many as a victory. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger announced last week that aerial spraying for the light brown apple moth would be halted until at least Aug. 17 and that more health testing would be done on the controversial agent used in the spraying, the Oakland Tribune and Bay City News Service recently reported. This will come as great news to the many people around the Bay Area concerned about the health risks and not convinced that the spraying would be an effective means of stopping the pest. The action came on the heels of a Santa... Read more »

Crime in Oakland continues. A 21-year-old robbery suspect was shot and killed by Oakland Police last night at East Seventh Street and 29th Avenue, the Oakland Tribune reported today. The action came after a dramatic chase that started after the man, who has warrants in El Cerrito for home invasion and carjacking, robbed an Enterprise rental car franchise in Alameda. The man took the clerk's cell phone and keys to a rental car and fled to Oakland. Police gunned the man down after he crashed the stolen car and fled on foot and eventually broke into a residence and attempted to take another car. Read more »

Pothole Blitz

In a concentrated effort to keep the City traffic safe and respond to pothole complaints, Public Works Agency crews continued a citywide pothole-filling blitz this month, the agency reported in a release this week. The blitz is a three-month effort, one week each in February, March and April. Public Works crews are focusing in a different geographical service area for each blitz, in order to make a tangible impact.

“I am encouraged by the success of this hands-on campaign to address a major quality of life issue in our City," said Mayor Dellums. “Through this effort, I am confident we will continue to confront the issue of pot holes, further limiting the damage to our roads, our neighborhoods and our vehicles.”

Crews will filled an estimated 1,800... Read more »

Christopher Rodriguez Update

Christopher Rodriguez, the Oakland youth who was paralyzed from the waist down after being struck by a stray bullet while taking piano lessons at Harmony Road Music, was represented with a card recently made and signed by his peers and classmates. In addition, the Oakland Youth Chorus handed Chris' mother over 400 letters from students that did not know Christopher, but felt the need to send him well wishes.

March 19 was the first time Chris attended an event or left the house other than for a medical appointment since he returned home from the hospital and he attended the first of many benefits produced by Oakland Youth Chorus to raise funds for his trust fund.  Oakland Youth Chorus for Music Education encourages the continued support of Chris and his family as they...
