Let the Weddings Begin

Hundreds of couples are expected to wed today around the state in the first day that same-sex marriage is legal in California, the San Francisco Chronicle reported today. Members of the press, protesters and well-wishers, along with hundreds of couples, are already lining up at city hall in San Francisco, the paper reported. In San Francisco more than 200 couples are expected to be married today. City officials and specially deputized volunteers are on hand to handle the rush. Del Martin and Phyllis Lyon, a couple of 55 years, made history yesterday as the first same-sex couple married in San Francisco and as one of the first in the state to be married, the Chronicle also reported today. The state Supreme Court recently bestowed the right for same-sex couples to marry, the ruling went into effect at 5:01 p.m. yesterday.
