Weekend Fun

Here are some fun weekend events, preceded by two news items.

• Oakland City Attorney John Russo announced yesterday that the California Department of Food and Agriculture will halt its plan to spray Bay Area Cities in an effort to eradicate the light brown apple moth. “Today’s announcement is a victory for all Californians who believe that our government should not gamble with public health and the well being of our environment. After the court decisions in Santa Cruz and Monterey, the state’s plan to spray an untested chemical over our homes, businesses and schools without a proper environmental review was all but over. Credit is due to Secretary Kawamura for putting a stop to a poorly conceived program before Oakland and our neighbors had to go to court to do it for him,” Russo said.

• The Bay Area Air Quality Management District announced that Friday June 20 is a Spare the Air day. Public transit is not free today. The public is encouraged to drive less, carpool, take public transit or telecommute.

• The Chabot Space and Science Center is celebrating 125 years and today, June 20, they held a ceremony at Lafayette Square at 11th and Jefferson streets. The ceremony is a dedication for a marker in the spot where the original Oakland Observatory stood in 1883. Tomorrow, June 21, celebrate with a free day at Chabot. The Chabot Space Games day is perfect for kids and adults. 10 a.m.–6 p.m.,  10000  Skyline Blvd.,  (510) 336-7300.

• Company C Contemporary Ballet presents the Oakland Dance Festival tonight with the Axis Dance Company in a performance entitled Wooden Hearts. 8 p.m., June 20, $10, The Malonga Casquelourd Center for the Arts, 1428 Alice St., (925) 708-0752. • Stop by the local branch of the national Bake Sale for Obama this weekend. 10 a.m.–6 p.m., June 21-22, 2637 Piedmont Ave., Berkeley.

• Enjoy the third annual Laurel Summer Solstice Music Festival this Saturday. More than 70 groups are expected to perform. 1 p.m.–7 p.m., June 21, free, Laurel District, MacArthur Boulevard near Laurel Elementary School, 3750 Brown Ave.

• Walk in the Wild: Join more than 1,200 zoo supporters at the 16th annual Walk in the Wild event, the largest zoo fundraiser of the season. Guests will take a stroll around the zoo, enjoy drinks, dinner and dessert provided by scores of local restaurants, wineries and breweries, plus dancing to live music, with proceeds benefiting education, conservation and animal enrichment programs. 5 p.m.–10 p.m., $150, $125 members, $250 VIP, 9777 Golf Links Road, (510) 632-9525, ext. 130.
