Nonprofilt Events
By Dan The Oakland Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce urges the support of the following nonprofit members and their upcoming events. The events are listed in chronological order.
OAKLAND YOUTH ORCHESTRA – The 44th season of the youth orchestra will feature a Pirates Gala on Sunday, March 2 starting at 3 p.m. at the Community Center of the Ascension Cathedral in Oakland. The event will include a silent and live auction, dinner and concert with music from Pirates of the Caribbean. Info: www.oyo.org or (510) 832-7710.
CARNAVAL – This year the Chamber of Commerce will bring Mardi Gras to Oakland. On Wednesday, March 5, the Chamber is throwing a “Carnaval” – Mardi Gras style – along with our annual business showcase to celebrate all members. Many local companies will be displaying their wares at the table-top fun event, which will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Oakland Marriott City Center. Attendees will enjoy a night of entertainment, food and drink, exciting door prizes, networking and lots of fun. There is no cost to attend this event for Chamber members, so come out and enjoy a business fair while enjoying the fun of a Mardi Gras. OAKLAND MUSEUM OF CALIFORNIA – “First Fridays After Five” will continue with live reggae music in the café, performances by a Korean fusion jazz band, and talks and book signings on Friday, March 7 from 5 to 9 p.m. Info: (510) 238-2022 or visit www.museumca.org.
DUNSMUIR HOUSE – Dunsmuir will hold an open house on Saturday, March 8 at 2 p.m. to introduce Jim DeMersman as the new executive director for the estate. Then on Saturday, March 22, an old fashioned Easter celebration will be held on the grounds from noon to 3 p.m. and the mansion will be open for tours. Info: www.dunsmuir.org or (510) 615-5555.
ST. VINCENT DE PAUL OF ALAMEDA COUNTY – Beginning at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 12, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul of Alameda County will celebrate its 70th anniversary with the first of the Kitchen of Champions’ “Guest Chef Series” featuring A Cote’s executive chef Matt Colgan. Held at 675 23rd St., the meals will cost $50 per person and reservations are required. Info: (510) 636-4261.
STAGEBRIDGE THEATRE COMPANY – The world premier of “Chicken Sunday” – the musical – will be performed at 3 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, March 15 and 16 at Arts First Oakland, 2501 Harrison St. at 27th Street near Lake Merritt. CHABOT SPACE & SCIENCE CENTER – How are the sun and earth connected? How does the sun interact with the earth’s atmosphere? These questions and more will be answered at “Sun and Earth Day” on Saturday, March 29 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The event is free with general admission. MARCUS A. FOSTER EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTE – In keeping with a long-standing tradition that began more than 15 years ago, Marcus Foster has announced the return of the “Corporate Challenge” – a spelling bee, which will be held on Thursday, April 10 beginning at 5 p.m. The competition challenges Oakland’s corporate community to face-off with other businesspeople in a spelling bee, and most importantly to raise funds to support Oakland’s graduating seniors through multi-year scholarships. OAKLAND BALLET – Coming off a successful run with The Nutcracker during the holiday season, the Oakland Ballet will perform “The Secret Garden” on Saturday, April 12 at the Paramount Theatre. Based on the Frances Hodgson Burnett children’s classic, the story tells the tale of a neglected garden that slowly stirs to life under the careful stewardship of three children. Choreographed by Ronn Guidi in 1996, the full length ballet comes to life again for two performances with Michael Morgan conducting members of the Oakland East Bay Symphony. HABITAT FOR HUMANITY EAST BAY – This nonprofit will hold its annual Build-A-Thon fundraiser over Earth Day weekend, beginning Saturday, April 19 and concluding Tuesday, April 22. Help frame six houses in four days. Hundreds of volunteers collect pledges in support of their building effort and participate for one day or the entire event. Anyone 16 or older can build. OAKLAND UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT – The second annual Celebrity Golf Tournament for “Music in Schools Today” will be held on Monday, April 21 at Sequoyah Country Club in the Oakland hills. Proceeds benefit music programs in the OUSD. Info: www.mustcreate.org or (415) 392-9010.
MERCY RETIREMENT & CARE CENTER – This nonprofit will hold a Casino Nite fundraiser for our frail seniors on Saturday, April 26 at St. Pascal’s Parish in Oakland. Info: www.mercyretirementcenter.org or (510) 534-8547, ext. 322.
VOLUNTEERS OF AMERICA BAY AREA – Volunteers of America Bay Area and Grant Writing USA will present a two-day grant writing workshop in Alameda on Thursday and Friday, May 1-2.
