Gunshots in Alameda

Two teenagers were injured by gunfire Sunday night in Alameda after a fight broke out at Chef's Wok on Webster Street, the Mercury News reported Tuesday. Police who responded to the shooting at 10:40 p.m. found hundreds of young people at the scene, but nobody could identify the shooter, according to reports. Investigators were altered by hospital staff about the victims, a 17-year-old girl and 16-year-old boy, both from Oakland. The two victims were treated and released. Pocket Park Dedication

The City of Oakland dedicates a new pocket park on the Waterfront Trail this morning, the city of Oakland announced. The park, in a little-known corner of the Oakland Estuary, will open to walkers, bikers and nature lovers at 10:30 a.m. Councilmembers Larry Reid and Jane Brunner will attend the opening. The park is located at Oakport Street at Zhone Way and is part of the proposed 500-mile long San Francisco Bay Trail. Funds for the project came from the Oakland Trust for lean Water and Safe Parks, Measure DD, a $198 million bond measure. Read more »

Fruitvale Cleanup

City crews are conducting a cleanup operation on Fruitvale Avenue this morning. Activities include graffiti abatement, garbage and litter pickup, traffic operations, towing abandoned cars, filling potholes, painting curbs, trimming trees and more, according to a city-issued release. The operation is being conducted by the City of Oakland Area IV Service Delivery System Team. The staging area is on Fruitvale Avenue and International Boulevard at 9:30 a.m. and the cleanup is on Fruitvale between International Boulevard and Lynde Street. Read more »

Go to Mars this Weekend

Enjoy a free open house to celebrate the Phoenix spacecraft landing on Mars at The Crucible this Sunday. Events for Youth

• Science projects from Oakland Unified School District students will be on display all day today at the Chabot Space and Science Center, the OUSD announced in a release. Science projects will be on display from students in kindergarten through grade 12 and a special reception will be held for students and their parents from 5 p.m.–7 p.m. tonight. Events Today

Friends of the Earth announced in a release today that they will release the results of its Killer Cribs study this morning. The study finds that a high percentage of baby products contain toxic fire retardant chemicals. A news conference will be held at 9:30 a.m. at Central Plaza in Union Square, San Francisco. California Assemblyman Mark Leno is expected to attend.

• Jerome Gourdine, principal of Oakland's Frick Middle School, received the Ambassador of Education award yesterday, according to KTVU news. Gourdine has led the school for the past 2 1/2 years and received a crystal apple and a $5,000 grant. The education award is given to... Read more »

Magazine Winners

Oakland Magazine took home three awards and Alameda Magazine one at the East Bay Press Club 2007 Excellence in Print Journalism Contest, according to a recent EBPC release. Other big winners at the awards banquet, held May 9 at the Silver Dragon in Oakland, included the Contra Costa Times with 19 awards, the San Francisco Chronicle with 16 and the Oakland Tribune with 15. Two student journalists, Stephanie Lin from the University of California, Berkeley and Justin Morrison of Contra Costa College, were honored.
