Truckers Protest Fuel Prices

About 50 Latin American and Punjabi truck drivers lined up fender-to-fender outside the Union Pacific rail terminal yesterday to protest the lack of support for diesel fuel from the carrier companies that hired them, the Oakland Tribune reported. According to truckers involved in the Cinco De Mayo protest, the company is not paying them for the fuel as promised and many claim that they are paying more than they make. The company that dispatches the drivers agreed to pay them 5 percent of their fuel costs above $2 per gallon, but, according to the Tribune, no payments have been made. This leaves the drivers paying the full $4.50 per gallon for the diesel fuel.
