What to do?

Great events to do in Oakland this weekend.

• See Duke Ellington's Queenie Pie previewing tonight at 8 p.m. and running through May 25 at the Oakland Metro Operahouse. 8 p.m. Thu.–Sat., 2 p.m. Sun., May 9–25, $28, $35 at the door, 630 Third St., (510) 763-1146.

• The City of Oakland's Office of Parks and Recreation announced in a recent release that they will hold the Hershey's track and field games in Oakland this Saturday. The event is designed to promote physical health, wellness and good sportsmanship. 9 a.m., May 10, free, Laney College, 900 Fallon St., (510) 238-3897.

• Got kids? Well this Saturday is your chance to take to the streets and show a little pride at the 3rd annual Proud Parents Grand Stroll. Prizes will be given to many families and the Blue Bone Express marching band will provide entertainment! The event is sponsored by the Grand Avenue Business Association. The stroll will go from the Grand Lake Theater to Safeway and back. 10 a.m., May 10, free, assemble at Grand and Lake Park avenues at 9:30 a.m.

• The City of Oakland's Office of Parks and Recreation announced in a recent release that they will honor the 2008 Mother of the Year this weekend. The 55th annual award goes to Ellen Wyrick-Parkinson this Saturday. The West Oakland resident has worked in the community for years, most recently she worked on the Raimondi Park rehabilitation project. 10:30 a.m., May 10, Morcom Rose Garden, 700 Jean St.

• Enjoy a green treasure hunt, a raffle, prizes and a solar cooking demonstration at a special Children's Fairyland event this weekend. According to the park, the nation's oldest storybook park is going green with the help of PG&E and park guests are invited to participate this Saturday. Upgrades to the park are many and include the replacing hundreds of old incandescent light bulbs. 11:30 a.m., May 10, $6 per person, 699 Bellevue Ave., (510) 452-2259.

Today’s Diverse Family Units Highlight Popular Merchant Event

Oakland, Calif. (May 7, 2008) – Grand Avenue merchants have donated prizes for families at the Grand Avenue Business Association’s (GABA) Third Annual Proud Parents’ Grand Stroll on Saturday, May 10, 2008. Marching jazz band Blue Bone Express will provide entertainment during the stroll

Families large and small, traditional and nontraditional are invited to show their pride by participating. Last year nearly every family won a prize. Stepping off at 10:00 a.m., the procession will amble down Oakland’ Grand Avenue from the Grand Lake Theater to Safeway and back. Participants are encouraged to come in festive attire or costume and decorate their strollers, baby slings, wagons or other conveyance to amplify the jubilant atmosphere.
