District Attorney Defends Case

Alameda County District Attorney Tom Orloff on Monday defended his office's handling of a sexual assault case against Ignacio De La Fuente Jr. after his father, City Council President Ignacio De La Fuente, claimed that his son was innocent, the Oakland Tribune reported last week. De La Fuente Jr. pled guilty to rape and assault charges in court earlier this year and, because he entered a plea, he cannot make a motion for a new trial. De La Fuente Sr. and his wife launched a Web site last week charging that the Oakland Police Department cooked up a case against De La Fuente Jr. in an effort to damage the council president's political career. Police Chief Wayne Tucker said the allegations would be investigated thoroughly.
