Art Director

Telegraph Media is looking for a full-time art director to oversee graphic design and visual communications in our fast-paced and growing publishing company.

We’re home to two lifestyle magazines, Alameda and Oakland magazines; an alternative newsweekly, the East Bay Express; The East Bay Monthly, a periodical of culture and commerce; Bay Woof, a San Francisco Bay Area dog newspaper. We also offer custom publishing products for on-demand clients. This position will be responsible for Alameda and Oakland magazines, the East Bay Express, and Bay Woof.

We’re looking for an art director who can act as the visual conductor of our products, conveying graphically an editorial voice through unifying designs and concepts.

The main responsibilities include:

• Conceiving, developing and designing covers, features, and other content with sizzle and creativity to produce inviting and easy-to-read layouts that adhere to general principles of good design and reflect our overall look and feel.

• Assigning eye-popping art and illustrations through close collaboration with freelance photographers and illustrators while staying within a limited art budget.

• Laying out 12 issues annually of glossy magazines from start to finish, 52 issues annually of the East Bay Express, and 12 issues annually of Bay Woof.

• Managing the art budget.

• Overseeing and assisting as necessary with custom publishing and all other company graphic art and design products.

• Coordinating production aspects of the magazines and newspapers with the printer.

About You:

• At least five years of hands-on graphic design for a magazine or newspaper, with experience assigning art.

• Knowledge of good design and ability to work within existing framework while making incremental improvements.

• Complete mastery of Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign and Acrobat applications and Macintosh operating systems.

• Expert knowledge of production and printing, including pre-press aspects, PDF workflow, and color correction.

• Initiative and enthusiasm in suggesting art and graphics and proposing design enhancements and an ability to work well without close supervision.

Account Executive at Oakland and Alameda Magazines and The East Bay Monthly

Telegraph Media, the publisher of Oakland Magazine, Alameda Magazine, the East Bay Express, and The East Bay Monthly, is seeking an account executive to sell advertising to local and regional businesses.

Qualified applicants will have several years of sales experience, preferably in media sales. Applicants should possess a genuine interest in helping local businesses achieve their objectives, while also advancing their own professional goals. Applicants should be ethical, professional, and able to build successful long-term relationships with clients while representing our company in the East Bay.

Account Executives find new clients to advertise in our print and online publications. They develop, contact and meet with prospects; assess their marketing needs; develop relevant and effective ad campaigns; sign contracts for new business; and have fun while doing so. Additional duties include participating in weekly sales meetings, attending local networking events, and assisting with Telegraph Media’s monthly events for advertisers.

Compensation consists of a base salary, commission, and a very attainable system of bonuses.

BEFORE YOU PITCH any ideas, however, familiarize yourself with our magazines, which includes general understanding of what we actually cover.  All queries should be well thought out and well researched yet short, to the point, and information packed. Upon receipt of a query that may interest the editor, clips and writing samples will be requested as evidence of the writer’s ability to complete the proposed assignment. Those should be sent via e-mail as attachments.

We publish everything from 350-word shorts to 2,500-plus word in-depth features, with most articles somewhere between those extremes. In general, we run a majority of 500-word and 750-word to 1,000-word articles. Our lead-time is about three months. Pay depends on the complexity of the assignment, and Telegraph Media pays upon publication.
