The National Geographic photographer is documenting every species of animal living in the world’s zoos and animal sanctuaries. The Brower center is honoring him for his work with a multi-month exhibition, Art/Act: Award – Photo Ark, Joel Sartore.

The David Brower Center honors National Geographic photographer Joel Sartore with its annual Art/Act Award for the activist work the photographer is doing on behalf of animals and their habitats for the National Geographic Photo Ark. The photographer’s arresting portraits of animals from the world’s zoos, aquariums, game preserves, and wildlife sanctuaries will hang at the center through mid-February in the exhibition Art/Act: Award – Photo Ark, Joel Sartore.

Sartore is documenting every animal species living in captivity, from the familiar to the exotic, from the common to the endangered — over 12,000 species of mammals, birds, fish, reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates in all. The project aims to be the largest single archive of studio-quality photographs of biodiversity ever, a testament to the majesty and spectacle of nature’s bounty and a reminder of people’s duty to be wise stewards of the Earth. Previously, Sartore’s animal portraits were projected on the Empire State Building and St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome, fitting canvases for such a magnificent subject.

Art/Act: Award – Photo Ark, Joel Sartore is sponsored by the city of Berkeley and Frog’s Leap Winery. There’s an opening reception with a presentation by Joel Sartore on Friday, Sept. 20, 5:30-7:30 p.m. Entry is free but tickets are required. The exhibition runs through Fri., Feb. 14. Hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Mon.-Fri. and 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Sat., free, David Brower Center, 2150 Allston Way, Berkeley, BrowerCenter.org.
