“Always Home” will be released March 31.
Fanny Singer, the daughter of revered Berkeley restaurateur Alice Waters, is now the author of a new memoir.
In Always Home: A Daughter’s Recipes & Stories, Singer recounts vignettes from her rosemary- and lemon-scented life spent eating, drinking, and traveling with the Chez Panisse founder, who wrote the book’s foreword and whose spirit resonates through these pages.
Recipes — for such dishes as as fruit galette, garlicky chicken soup, rose-hip jelly, wild fennel cakes, breakfast pudding, and Green Goddess lobster rolls — accompany the vignettes, as do original images by noted photographer Brigitte Lacombe.
San Francisco-based Singer is a writer, editor, art historian, and co-founder of the design brand, Permanent Collection. Her work has appeared in The Wall Street Journal Magazine, Apartamento, T Magazine, and other venues. With her mother, she coauthored and illustrated the 2015 book My Pantry: Homemade Ingredients That Make Simple Meals Your Own.
Set to be released by Penguin Random House on March 31, the new memoir-cookbook hybrid details daily routines around Singer’s Berkeley childhood home as well as at Chez Panisse and at farmers’ markets and restaurants here and abroad.
