Bay Fill Is Bad

If the bay planners intend to dredge the bottom of the bay and pile the bottom dirt around the edges for marshes that’s one thing [“Sundown for an Era on San Francisco bay,” August]. You’re making more room for water by deepening the ocean floor.

But if you intend to bulldoze Mount Tam and fill the Bay (in the sneaky hopes of someday building on it), well, that’s something else entirely. You see, it’s basic physics: Two things can’t be in the same place at the same time. If you fill SF Bay with dirt, some island in the Pacific goes under … and maybe it has your condo on it! If you still don’t get it, tonight, before you drink your martini, add six or seven more olives to the glass. Whoops, see what happens.
