Shootings Mar Oakland Lake Merritt Juneteenth Celebration

As KPIX reports The Saturday evening shooting, which killed one man and injured eight others, is believed to be related to members of a San Francisco gang. About 10,000 people had gathered at Lake Merritt on Saturday, to celebrate Juneteenth. This is one of the city’s first mass rallies of the year and the first rally since the pandemic restrictions were lifted.

Oakland police chief LeRonne Armstrong said Monday that his detectives were working with the San Francisco Police Department to identify multiple suspects. He confirmed that there were multiple shooters.

“We believe this is directly related to gang violence, and to gang violence unrelated to the city of Oakland,” Armstrong said in a statement. “This seems to be a gang related to the city of San Francisco.”

The victims of the shooting ranged from 16 to mid-60s, and the deceased was a 22-year-old man.
