Every year, Oakland Magazine’s Best of Oakland and the East Bay celebrates the businesses that make our region vibrant. The selection process for the Best Top Retail Stores is a two-round public voting event designed to ensure community voices are heard.
- Round One: Nominations (February – Mid-April) – Readers submit their favorite retail stores in an open write-in process. This stage allows hidden gems and new businesses to be recognized alongside long-time favorites.
- Round Two: Final Voting (Mid-April – May) – The top nominees from the first round move to the final ballot. Readers then vote from the official list of finalists. Write-ins are no longer accepted in this stage.
- Results Announcement (July – August) – Winners and Top 5 finalists are announced both online and in print, giving recognition to the businesses that received the most community support.
This annual tradition not only highlights excellence in local retail but also encourages residents to explore and support the diverse array of shops that make the East Bay such a special place to live and shop.
